Summer’s going fast – new paintings by PENG LIU - Opening Sept 10th 2-4pm

With his latest offerings, Peng Liu continues his exploration of the ephemeral nature of beauty.
The flower paintings recall his work of last year, the blooms depicting the transitory nature of life’s significant moments, fading almost as quickly as they are noticed, soon to be forgotten. They transition seamlessly into mountains, a deceptively simple backdrop over which shadows pass like life itself.

Ancient Chinese ink painting featured negative space to give the viewer room to imagine. In Liu’s recent works, the starkness of the black and white draws us into a similar sense of contemplation. Mountains suggest permanence and stability, yet our experiences are temporary, passing like layers of translucent color over their heavily textured surface.

This contrast hints at our all too human desire to hold onto what is precious, even though the impression that we can is illusory. As much as we try to savour it, summer passes too quickly. Likewise, we age more quickly than we imagine. We waste time on running around in our technologically driven world, when we should instead be reflecting on the meaning of our lives. Peng’s new work invites us to do just that.

Jacana Contemporary Art Gallery is proud to present the still life series of Jay Senetchko.

Although born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta Senetchko has become a prominent figure amongst Vancouver painters. This may be due to his long history of teaching art at Vancouver Film School or his role in artists’ collective Phantoms in the Front Yard. Primarily self taught, Senetchko’s work focusing predominantly in figurative painting can now be found in galleries throughout Canada and the United Kingdom.

Still is a recently completed series of Still Life by Senetchko. Though each object is at first seen as mundane and inanimate, their warm glow and rich textures suggest much more. The subject of each piece stands as a monument symbolizing a moment in the artist’s life.

Paired with the hyperrealist acrylic works of Jason de Graaf and the whimsical collage pieces of Patrick Locicero, Still exhibits the classic Still Life vanitas in contemporary day. Like many of the great Still Life pieces that have come before, this exhibition explores the narrative or meaning within the common object. Considered extensively and deeply enough, Senetchko notes that “…these objects start to ‘speak’ and belie their simplicity. It is the depth of these objects in which their stillness acquires life.”

“Still” は、Senetchkoによる最近完成した静物画のシリーズです。それぞれの対象物は、最初に見た時には、ありふれていて生気のないように見えますが、そ れらの暖かい熱と、豊かな質感は、より多くのものを示しています。それぞれの絵は、このアーティストの人生の中の象徴的な一瞬の記念碑です。

Jason de Graafのハイパー・リアリスト・アクリル作品と、Patrick Lociceroの風変わりなコラージュと対になり、“Still”は、見事な静物画をこの現代に公開致します。過去の多くのすばらしい静物画と同様に、 この展示作品は、ごくふつうの対象物の中に、物語や意味を探求しています。

深く考えた上、Senetchkoはこのように言います。「…これらの対象物は、”話し”はじめ、それらの簡素さを裏切ります。これらの対象物は深みを持っており、その中でそれらの静寂さは命を得ます。」
